Care & Maintenance

Keep the beauty. Protect the investment.

Tile and stone are built to last—but like any great design decision, a little care goes a long way. The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) recommends routine maintenance using the right products and methods to protect both the surface and the grout over time.

Below is a simple guide to help you maintain your installation with confidence. These guidelines are recommendations only. Always refer to manufacturer’s guidelines and TCNA recommendations for the final word.

General Guidelines (For Most Surfaces)

  • Use pH-neutral cleaners. TCNA recommends avoiding acids, ammonia, and bleach-based cleaners, which can damage grout and certain surfaces.

  • Avoid abrasive pads or steel wool. Tile is durable—but not scratch proof.

  • Change mop water frequently. Dirty water leaves residue and dulls the finish.

  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water after washing.

  • Dry the surface to prevent spotting or streaking—especially in commercial spaces.

  • Use entry mats to reduce grit and debris tracked indoors.

Glazed Porcelain & Ceramic

The glazed surface is dense and resistant to stains, water, and bacteria—making it one of the easiest materials to maintain.

Routine Care

  • Sweep or vacuum loose dirt.

  • Mop with a pH-neutral tile cleaner.

  • Rinse thoroughly.

  • Dry with a clean cloth for added shine.

Installation Tip
For textured surfaces, a grout release prior to grouting can simplify post-install cleanup and reduce haze.

Unglazed & Through-Body Porcelain

Unglazed surfaces are incredibly durable but may have microscopic texture that requires a little more attention—especially in matte finishes.

Best Practices

  • Clean regularly with a pH-neutral solution.

  • Use a soft to medium bristle brush for textured surfaces.

  • Consider a penetrating sealer in high-traffic areas to enhance stain resistance.

  • Follow sealer manufacturer guidelines for reapplication.

Natural Stone

Stone is timeless—and naturally more porous than tile. Proper sealing and gentle cleaning are key.

Always:

  • Use pH-neutral cleaners only.

  • Wipe spills promptly (especially acidic foods or beverages).

  • Avoid vinegar, lemon-based, ammonia, or bleach cleaners.

  • Seal with a breathable penetrating sealer as recommended by the manufacturer.

Routine sweeping prevents sand and grit from scratching softer stones.

Glass & Decorative Tile

Glass is impervious and easy to clean—but it can scratch.

  • Use a standard glass or multi-surface cleaner.

  • Apply with a soft cloth.

  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.

Metal Tile

Metal surfaces require gentle care.

  • Use a mild soap solution or manufacturer-approved cleaner.

  • Avoid abrasives that may scratch or accelerate oxidation.

  • Keep surfaces dry to prevent spotting.

Grout Care

Grout often requires more maintenance than the tile itself.

  • Clean regularly with pH-neutral cleaners.

  • Avoid routine use of bleach or harsh chemicals—they can weaken grout over time.

  • Seal cementitious grout as recommended.

  • Use a soft or medium bristle brush for deeper cleaning.

Pro Tip: Grout release before installation can prevent haze and make cleanup significantly easier.

Commercial Applications

High-traffic areas require a more structured maintenance plan:

  • Keep floors as dry as possible after cleaning.

  • Replace mop water frequently.

  • Avoid over-buffing, which may create uneven wear.

  • Use felt pads under furniture and fixtures.

  • Test stain removers in a small area first.

For periodic deep cleaning, follow manufacturer instructions carefully and always rinse thoroughly.
